What is Chaplaincy?

"I'm interested
in becoming a
Vocational Chaplain.
Where do I start?"

Church of God Chaplains serve around the world as Vocational Chaplains and Community Service Chaplains. They are fulfilling the Church’s missional mandate to take the hope of the Gospel outside the doors of the local church into the society in which we live. The Chaplains Commission is the ministry of the Church of God that provides the official endorsement for ordained ministers to fill positions as Vocational Chaplains and certifies the training for Community Service Chaplains.
Vocational Chaplaincy
Vocational Chaplains are employed by institutions and organizations in society.
Community Service Chaplaincy
Community Service Chaplains are clergy and laity who volunteer their services in institutions and organizations in society.

Where do Chaplains Serve?

MILITARY

Chaplains serve in all branches of the military as well as Veterans Affairs. They provide pastoral care and religious support to current and prior service military personnel.

SCHOOLS

Chaplains provide service to students in Elementary School through University, as well as their families, teachers, and faculty. Chaplains work with staff and students on spiritual and emotional issues to encourage holistic well-being.

HOSPITALS

Hospitals and Hospice services rely on qualified Chaplains who will comfort patients and help families through times of difficulty. Chaplains provide ministerial care to patients and their loved ones.

COMMUNITY

Community Service Chaplains may serve wherever people gather, from sports teams to disaster relief. Community Service Chaplains are trained to respond to a multitude of circumstances and people of all backgrounds.

Why Chaplaincy?

Chaplaincy is a transformative service for not only those being served, but those serving as well.

ANSWER A CALL TO MINISTRY

Matthew 28:19 calls us to serve all nations and foster their spiritual and emotional well-being. Provide others an outlet for issues of faith, from end-of-life questions to offering encouragement and hope.

SERVE OUTSIDE CHURCH WALLS

Share Christ's message outside of the Church setting. Cross over boundaries to reach people from diverse backgrounds, sharing the gospel with them in their walk through life.

REACH THOSE IN NEED

Serve people where they are, and show them love when they least expect it. Connect with the community in their homes, work spaces, and in public arenas.

Bringing church to inmates

“The church is growing...I praise the Lord for all those Pastors and Evangelists that have donated from their time to come and preach. I’m sure that the Lord is sending a revival and great ministries will arise. ”
Marilu Ickes, Prison Chaplain

Fulfilling needs in Title One Schools

“This is one area of great need often overlooked where we can make a difference. I am so glad that even in 'retirement' God opened this door to me at the Center to be in school ministry again.”
